A tax for muni Wi-Fi?

This story posted on ZDnet is interesting ...

Do you think this is a good idea? If so, should this subsidy be targetted to a particular technology (eg. WiFi)? What consequences do you think this would have for both municipal network adoption and for private broadband networks? Do you think that a national government should be making policy in what is a local phenomenon?

Earthlink and Municipal networks

I have commented about commercial self-interest related to municipal networks on this blog earlier (see this) and in this recent Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article. So, I will take the liberty of tooting my own horn in light of this article in Business 2.0. To what extent do you think the municpal networks "movement" is driven by unabashed commercial self interest? Or, do you think this is just a red herring and the firms who are profitting from this phenomenon are doing so as a by product of an overall social good?

Google in BW (off topic)

I have written about Google from time to time on this blog (see, for example, this item). In light of that, this article caught my eye. Is this an expected outcome of commercial success? Google, as an "underdog" and a "dark horse" was long the public favorite. Is this changing because of America's bias toward underdogs (that Google no longer is)?

Spectrum markets in the press

Many readers of this blog know that I have been interested in spectrum markets for some time. While important, this topic has been one of interest mainly to policy wonks and researchers in this field. Thus, when this article came to my attention, I was delighted that there may be greater mainstream interest in this topic emerging.
