Cringley on Internet Growth

Robert X. Cringley has had some interesting insights. In this article, he takes a long term view of Internet growth. He touches on growth histories of previous technologies and, in doing so, provides a useful new frame for the discussion on network neutrality. Focussing on television, he considers likely technology trends into the future.

Do you agree with Cringley's analysis? Do you think the future is in distributed content, the way he does? How would you do DRM effectively in that context (assuming you think it will be necessary in future)? How about resource finding?

Next Generation DVD format wars redux

This blog has discussed the next gen DVD standards previously (see, for example, this). This article appeared in this weekend's NY Times (free subscription required) that discusses the current state of affairs. Much has changed since I last visited this topic.

Do you think the fortune of the HD-DVD camp have changed (as John Freeman does)? Do you think a next generation DVD format war matters, given the trends in video distribution?

Network Neutrality and Municipal Broadband

This item gives at least partial voice to some thoughts that I have been rattling around in my brain lately ... unfortunately I have been sufficiently consumed with other things that I haven't been able to give them more definition. Do you think these two phenomena are interconnected? When I think about some of the discussion about Google's plans and activities late last year (see, for example, this item), I begin imagining the possibility of a balkanized future for the Internet.
